RISA BVI: Founded in 2009, the Recovery & Insolvency Specialists Association (RISA) aims to bolster the insolvency and restructuring industry in the British Virgin Islands (BVI). With nearly 220 members, RISA’s seven strong board and five-strong events committee actively host technical and social events while advocating for legislative improvements in the BVI.
BVI’s Financial Significance: The BVI, a major international financial centre, boasts over 360,000 registered companies and stands out as a leading fund domicile globally. Its insolvency and restructuring work often involves complex group structures involving cross-border scenarios. BVI’s insolvency practitioners and attorneys regularly collaborate with counterparts worldwide.
Navigating BVI Insolvency: All insolvency appointments in the BVI require licensed practitioners who understand both local nuances and international intricacies. The BVI Insolvency Act 2003 provides a robust legal framework, supported by a strong Commercial Court.
Membership Tiers: RISA BVI offers three membership classes:
• General: For BVI residents who belong to recognised professional bodies.
• Associate: Open to professionals engaged in BVI insolvency matters, even if residing overseas.
• Student: Aspiring minds keen on exploring insolvency and restructuring as a career.
Visiting lawyers and counsel are actively encouraged to join RISA BVI and participate in social and technical events.
